Internet Directory

Internet Directory is a single, loose-leaf book of 37,000+ pages, listing every .COM domain alphabetically. Each is shown phonebook-style, with its IPv4 address. This includes active websites, abandoned personal projects, aspiring Internet businesses that never materialized, and combinations of words that domain squatters saw commercial value in, however fleeting. Collectively, they explore the language of the Web and the exhaustive quality of Internet naming. It contains 115 million .COM domains – all which existed when the project began in early 2014.

Internet Directory is currently in exhibition at Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe (ZKM) in Karlsruhe. Live readings of the project have taken place at Pioneer Works, the Radical Networks conference in Brooklyn, the Museu do Chiado in Lisbon, among others. A day-long reading at a domain name conference in Las Vegas was covered by Ingrid Burrington for the Atlantic , who called the work "a wonderful meditation on the domain-name form" and the readings "hypnotic."

It is published by AND Publishing.

A list of every .COM domain, each shown in phonebook style with its IPv4 address. The videos on display are excerpts from the project, showing all the domains that start with a certain set of characters, such as »altered.« This includes active websites, abandoned personal projects, aspiring Internet businesses that never materialized, and combinations of words that domain squatters saw commercial value in, however fleeting. Collectively, they explore the language of the Internet and the exhaustive quality of Internet naming. The "Internet Directory" contains 115 million .COM domains – all which existed when the project began in early 2014.

Internet Directory page preview

(2014)

A sample from the full Internet Directory project. Here are pages 19,854 - 19,858. Each page is only printed once, so there is only one Internet Directory book, its pages spread across the world.

The original Serious volume

(2011)

Before the full Internet Directory project came into being, it was a single, bound book, containing every domain in .COM, .ORG, and .NET beginning with the word Serious. As an excercise in semantic satiation, try reading more than a few pages in order and reflect on the word.
